Following the economic crisis of 1997, there were many training programmes in a Bangkok park teaching people to take up alternative activities. One of these was making products from wastepaper. Housewives and other unemployed women, who live in a low income urban community in Bangkok picked up this skill and started making different kinds of products out of many types of discarded paper. A craft group was soon formed and more people learnt the craft, developing their skills further as they went. Sheets of waste paper are carefully rolled into tight rods and then glued and woven into fantastic and imaginative creations.
